Focus Group Discussion with Ethiopian Migrant Workers for (SH+) WHO stress management tool cultural adaptation
24-07-2025
Ten Ethiopian migrant workers residing in Beirut and Mount Lebanon participated in a focus group discussion aimed at contributing to the cultural and linguistic adaptation of the World Health Organization’s Self-Help Plus (SH+) program.
The goal was to ensure that the mental health materials reflect their lived experiences in Lebanon. The session addressed challenges faced by migrant workers such as isolation, economic hardship, and the stress caused by the Kafala (sponsorship) system, marking the first global adaptation of its kind of the SH+ program specifically for migrant worker communities.
This work is implemented by the Lebanese Center for Civic Education (LCCE) in collaboration with the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), and in coordination with the International Rescue Committee (IRC). It is made possible by the World Bank administered Multi Donor Trust Fund for Forced Displacement and the PROSPECTS Partnership. PROSPECTS is supported by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
